What's New

TORNADO UPDATE 2 - May 9, 2008

1. The Disaster Recovery Center closes Friday evening, May 9th.  After that help will be available at the offices of city departments, Red Cross, Salvation Army, United Way, etc.  We (Presbyterians) provided 19 different volunteers to keep the Center running for 8 days.

2. Bruce Sharp attended the United Way Tornado Relief Meeting: Suffolk Allocation Panel on May 7, representing the faith-based community.  Bruce learned that 451 households were affected, of which about 400 have applied for assistance through the Center.  Each will be called starting today to find out short/long term needs, and staff will be available for individual meetings after the Community meeting Thursday night.  A brief discussion followed on the three phases of recovery, immediate needs, startover assistance, and future needs.  FInally, a decision on a disbursement timeline was postponed until next Tuesday's meeting so that data collection can be finished.  At that time he hopes to get some ideas about where PEVA can fit in.

3. Lynda Richmond and Bruce were at King's Fork High School for the second Community Information Meeting.  City Manager Selena Cuffee-Glenn introduced heads of city departments to give progress updates.  Highlights included the fact that 2,160  permits have been issued by the police for contractors to enter the protected areas. Power has been restored to all but 300 customers, and gas to all except 90.  The City Treasurer discussed tax relief, and there were many pamphlets offered by Commonwealth Attorney, Mental Health Board, Health Department, etc.  The United Way reported having received $610,000 in donations so far, and the Red Cross had 179 volunteers serving 161 cases as well as $38,000 in kind and $100,000 cash donations.  Tables were available in the lobby with staff to answer questions not answered in the presentations.
Last subject was the Live United Community Care Clean-up to be held this Saturday, May 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Volunteer groups (about 1,500 have signed up) will park at King's Fork High School to be shuttled to disaster areas.  They will return to the high school for a picnic and celebration.

Everyone involved lauded the spirit of cooperation and helpfulness through these trying times.  The audience applauded all efforts,  and the City Manager and Mayor received a standing ovation.

Special Thanks to national PDA Team

Special thanks to Dave and Carolyn Thalman who stayed in Suffolk until last Sunday and did Minutes for Missions at SPC and St. Andrew.  They and Rev. Beth Goss were a tremendous help in “getting us off on the right foot”.

We offer the following suggestions for you to follow in offering assistance -  THREE IMMEDIATE NEEDS:

#1  Cash contributions are the most efficient response.  Presbyterian Disaster Assistance funds, and those sent by our churches will be used to “leverage gifts to unmet needs” after federal, state and insurance funds have been exhausted.  There are often many financial gaps that remain after the usual sources have been spent, such as multiple deductibles, tree removal, counseling, etc.  These needs will be identified through the Disaster Center intake process and forwarded to our PDA Task Force for approval.  Many of our churches are collecting a special offering for this purpose this Sunday.  These funds should be sent to the PEVA office and will be put into a unique fund to be used for tornado recovery.

#2  The United Way is coordinating volunteers.  You may go to www.unitedwayshr.org/tornado and scroll to the bottom of the page to fill out a volunteer form for this particular disaster.   The link for the form itself is:

http://www.baseportal.com/cgi-bin/baseportal.pl?htx=/uwshr/tornadoVol/vol_add

#3  Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads will make minor, non-structural, emergency repairs for tornado victims.  Their number is:  757-640-0590.  Those with construction skills may want to offer their services through this group.

#4  Please continue to pray for the victims of this disaster and for the responders as well.

Click here to open the PDA document, "Self-Care Things to Try" which outlines ways that people can ease the stress, depression and anxiety that occur after such traumatic events.

Thank you for your generosity!
